Clean Energy Neighborhoods

To meet its emissions mandates, Massachusetts must transition over 80% of its buildings to efficient electric heat pumps by 2050 and then produce that electricity with renewables.

The result will improve air quality, provide better health outcomes, and reduce our impact on our children’s climate.

However, it will require a lot of work, including:

  • Retrofitting over 80% of our buildings to be all electric

  • Rightsizing our natural gas system

  • Upgrading our electric transmission and distribution systems to deliver the increase in electricity

Proposed Strategies

HEETlabs is exploring how to meet the mandates in a tactical and efficient way in order to lower the costs.

The strategies below could help pay for the retrofits needed on our buildings to allow all of us to move to clean electricity equitably.
